Anticipated Jdramas: Winter 2017

Drama News / Upcoming DramasJapanese Dramas

Hello jdrama fans, it’s been such a long time since I last wrote up an anticipated jdramas post!  I’m happy to say there are a few jdramas that I’ve got my eye on for this upcoming winter 2017 season!

My Most Anticipated Jdramas

Fuben na Benriya 2016 Hatsuyuki (Winter SP)

Notable Cast Members:

Okada Masaki, Endo Kenichi, Suzuki Kosuke

Genre:

Comedy

Preview:

Thoughts:

Granted, this is only one episode, but I loved the first season so much that I think it deserves a spot in my anticipated jdramas post. 😛  I’ve been hoping for a sequel to my favorite comedy jdrama, Fuben na Benriya, so I’m ecstatic that it’s coming out with a special episode!  For those who haven’t seen or heard of Fuben na Benriya, I highly recommend it!  It’s a hilarious drama with a great cast, bizarre and memorable happenings, and lots of heart.  It’s the perfect time of year for Fuben na Benriya to release an SP; I can finish my year laughing and feeling hopeful for the new year to come.

Seirei no Moribito Season 2 ~ Kanashiki Hakaishin (Live Action)

Notable Cast Members

Ayase Haruka, Maki Yoko, Suzuki Rio, Itagaki Mizuki

Genre:

Fantasy, action, live action

Air Date:

January 21, 2017

Synopsis:

The sequel resumes 4 years after season 1.  Chagum (now the crown prince) and Balsa have split ways.  Balsa (Ayase Haruka) continues to be a bodyguard and rescues yet another kid, this time an orphaned young girl (Suzukio Rio) who holds an uncontrollable power.  Balsa protects her from assassins, but Chagum is also in danger…

Thoughts:

Seirei no Moribito is so epic that it is already slated for a third season (reportedly in November 2017)!  I loved the first season, so I’m definitely looking forward to watching season 2 and going on to watch season 3!  Ayase Haruka is returning as Balsa, along with other supporting cast members from season 1.  But, new cast members including Maki Yoko (MOZU, Saikou no Rikon), Itagaki Mizuki, and Suzuki Rio (Woman) are joining to freshen things up!  Maki Yoko will be playing the role of one of the villains; it seems like she will be one of the assassins who is after Suzuki Rio’s character.   Chagum is now 4 years older, so an older actor, Itagaki Mizuki, will be taking on his role.

It seems like the plot of season 2 will be similar to season 1 in that Balsa is protecting another kid.  I’m curious to see whether season 2 will be able to make this new pairing interesting and not just a repeat of Balsa & Chagum’s camaraderie in season 1.  And of course, I’m curious to find out what’ll happen when Chagum and Balsa meet again!

Quartet (2017)

Notable Cast Members:

Matsuda Ryuhei, Matsu Takako, Mitsushima Hikari, Takahashi Issei

Genre:

Romance, suspense

Air Date:

January 17, 2017

Synopsis:

“A fateful meeting.  Hidden in it were four lies.”

Sakamoto Yuji’s latest drama.  Quartet 2017 (not to be confused with other dramas by the same name!) tells about four musicians in their thirties who coincidentally meet and decide to form a quartet together.  But there is a secret behind their coincidental meeting..

Teaser:

Thoughts:

I’m trying not to hype up Quartet 2017 toooo much, but there are so many reasons to look forward to it:

  • It’s written by Sakamoto Yuji, who wrote some hit jdramas like Saikou no Rikon and Soredemo Ikite Yuku.  Though, I don’t automatically like all of his dramas, so I’m trying to keep my expectations at bay.
  • Matsuda Ryuhei is in it.
  • Mitsushima Hikari is in it.
  • Both Matsuda Ryuhei and Mitsushima Hikari are in a drama together.  I wanna see.  😛
  • It’s not just a romance, there’s also some kind of mystery or secrets involved.

First Impressions:

Episodes 1-2 Review

Byplayers ~ Moshimo 6-nin no Meiwakiyaku ga Sharehouse de Kurashitara

Notable Cast Members:

Endo Kenichi, Osugi Ren, Taguchi Tomorow, Terajima Susumu, Matsushige Yutaka, Mitsuishi Ken

Genre:

Comedy

Air Date:

January 14, 2017

Synopsis:

6 supporting male actors have to live together for 3 months in a share house to prepare for their roles in an upcoming drama.  The actors struggle to get along.  Rumor has it that the lead role is open, leading to more conflict.

Thoughts:

I’m interested in this drama based on the funny synopsis and its focus on supporting actors.  Sometimes supporting actors don’t get enough love!

Other Jdramas

Kimi wa Petto 2017

I was extremely surprised to hear that Kimi wa Petto is having another adaptation, though I suppose I shouldn’t be…considering how there was a Korean movie adaptation a while back.  The 2003 version with Koyuki and MatsuJun was just so good that I doubt this new version will do as well.  That being said, it may be interesting seeing a more updated version of the story?  No more old cellphones from the 2003 version? 😛  I’d like to see Koyuki & MatsuJun have a cameo…

Preview:

A Life ~ Itoshiki Hito

This is Kimutaku’s latest comeback drama since his 2015 drama I’m Home.  I think the concept for I’m Home was more interesting than the concept for his new medical drama.  Personally I’m not that into medical dramas, so I doubt I’ll be checking this one out.

Onna Joshu Naotora

Frankly the synopsis for this drama sounds awesome.  Shibasaki Kou plays the role of a princess who becomes the lord of her family’s castle.  But, this was written by the same scriptwriter for Watashi wo Hanasanaide, which didn’t turn out that great.  This is also a period drama with 50 episodes, so it’s possible that the story will be dragged out.

What jdramas are you looking forward to the most for winter 2017?  Let me know in the comments! 🙂

What’s New?

-Quartet ep4: Seems like the drama is focusing on one character's story in each episode. Now that we've gotten to see each main character's background story, I wonder what direction the drama will take. Each episode leaves me still impressed with each lead actor...seriously. Matsuda Ryuhei is 100% Beppu here. I even forget that Beppu is acted by Matsuda Ryuhei when watching his character!

-Kamenashi Kazuya, Kimura Fumino, and Yamashita Tomohisa will be starring in an upcoming spring jdrama called Boku, Unmei no Hito desu. Kamenashi and Yamashita are reuniting again, after their popular roles in the high school drama Nobuta wo Produce.

-EVERYONE. I highly recommend watching the Taiwanese romance movie Our Times, starring Vivian Sung, Dino Lee, and Darren Wang. It is TOOOOO GOOD. It's your usual high school-first-love-story but it does it SO WELL. GOOO WATCH IT.

-On an indefinite hiatus.
