Anticipated J-dramas: Fall 2014

Drama News / Upcoming DramasJapanese DramasJapanese Dramas

With the end of the summer season, it’s finally time to transition into the autumn jdramas!  There are a lot of upcoming jdramas that have caught my eye so far! 😀

______

For the story

______

ajdr-gdnda

Gu-gu datte Neko de Aru

Notable Cast:

Miyazawa Rie

Genre:

Live action, slice-of-life?

Network:

WOWOW

Short Summary:

A popular manga artist struggles to continue drawing manga after her beloved cat suddenly dies.  She tries to recover from her cat’s death, but nothing seems to help.  One day, she encounters a sick kitten and decides to take it under her wing.  This is a live action based on the original manga Gugu datte Neko de Aru.  It has also been adapted into a live action film in 2008.

Thoughts:

I already fell in love with the promo poster alone, it brings a smile to my face.  Just look at that cute kitty!  :3  I love the synopsis for the story, it’s simplistic but interesting, and is sure to have a lot of heart in it.  I’m also curious to see how WOWOW will adapt the original manga into this drama, since it seems like it’ll be more lighthearted and introspective than WOWOW’s usual dark dramas.  I need me a mellow drama this fall season!!

Nobunaga Concerto

Notable Cast:

Oguri Shun, Kaho, Shibasaki Kou, Mukai Osamu, Fujiki Naohito

Genre:

Live action, fusion period

Network:

Fuji TV

Short Summary:

This is based on the original manga Nobunaga Concerto, which was also adapted into an anime fairly recently.  Oguri Shun plays the role of Saburo, a high school student who time-travels to the year of 1549, the Sengoku Era.  It turns out he has the same appearance as another man during that time period–Oda Nobunaga, a powerful historical figure who aimed to unify Japan. The real Nobunaga tells Saburo to take his place, and then disappears.

Thoughts:

I’m not big on taiga dramas since they are so long and complicated to watch…they’re really just not my thing.  =_=  I do, however, love fusion period jdramas because they add a unique twist to the period stories!  So I’m looking forward to Nobunaga Concerto; not sure how the anime/manga played out though since I heard mixed opinions about them.  Of course, the cast is enough to catch the eye as well–Oguri Shun is a good choice for the lead IMO because of his familiarity with live action roles and his experience as an anime voice actor.  There are also other big names in the supporting cast–Kaho!  Fujiki Naohito!  And the list goes on!

Tamagawa Kuyakusho of The Dead

(Tamagawa Ward of the Dead)

Notable Cast:

Hayashi Kento, Hirose Alice

Genre:

Comedy

Network:

TV Tokyo

Short Summary:

The zombie apocalypse happened 16 years ago.  But the world didn’t end. The zombies were weak and thus were not seen as dangerous beings.  Instead zombie sightings simply became a part of everyday normal life.   Hayashi Kento plays the role of a young man who works in a division that contains zombies.  His boring life starts to change once a new rookie (Hirose Alice) joins his division.

Thoughts:

LOL what?  A zombie jdrama?  And on top of that it’s a comedy?  I will check this out just for kicks.  I’m not a big fan of the casting of Hayashi Kento & Hirose Alice though. >_<

Gomenne Seishun

(Sorry, Youth)

Notable Cast:

Mitsushima Hikari, Nishikido Ryo

Genre:

School, comedy

Network:

TBS

Short Summary:

Heisuke (Nishikido Ryo) is a new aspiring teacher who is working at a school that has just become co-ed.  He wants to make the school’s cultural festival a success.  But something from his past is holding him back..

Thoughts:

I never imagined the combination of Nishikido Ryo and Mitsushima Hikari.  Mind blown.  The full synopsis doesn’t reveal what Mitsushima Hikari’s role is though!  From the trailers, we see that she is a….NUN?!?!  I’m even more curious about the drama now, heheh.  From what I gather, Mitsushima Hikari & Nishikido Ryo’s characters were involved in their youth, (apparently they had bad memories together =_=)  and they are now butting heads at their workplace.  If you need another reason to be excited for this aside from the cast, this is written by the same screenwriter who wrote Ama-chan!

Heisei Saru Kani Kassenzu

Notable Cast:

Kora Kengo, Suzuki Kyoka

Genre:

?

Network:

WOWOW

Short Summary:

Junpei (Kora Kengo) is a bartender in Tokyo who witnesses a hit and run.  He realizes that the culprit is actually a famous celebrity.  Junpei tries to blackmail the celebrity for quick cash, but his plans are foiled by the celebrity’s manager, Yuko (Suzuki Kyoka).  Despite Junpei’s underhanded actions, Yuko starts to take an interest in him.  (NO, not in a romantic way!  At least..I don’t think so..)

Thoughts:

I know the synopsis is confusing, even the longer complete synopsis is kind of vague so there’s not much I can do there.  It seems like the hit & run incident and the blackmailing is not the major part of the story, it’s just the impetus for the main characters to meet.  Anyways I’m mainly looking forward to this drama for Kora Kengo–I’ve become a big fan of his ever since I saw him in the 2013 jdrama Hard Nut!  He’s a very charismatic actor, I have no doubts he will nail this role! 😀

Kyou wa Kaisha Yasumimasu

Notable Cast:

Ayase Haruka, Fukushi Sota, Tamaki Hiroshi

Genre:

Rom-com, live action

Network:

NTV

Short summary:

Hanae (Ayase Haruka) is an average OL who doesn’t have much experience in love.  She accidentally has a one night stand with a new young coworker, Yuto (Fukushi Sota).  The two of them start to date..but a handsome CEO also pursues Hanae!  LOVE TRIANGLE!

Thoughts:

For the record, I’m not really looking forward to this drama because it sounds like Last Cinderella 2.0 (YES, warning bells should be ringing in your head!).  The plot is generic, with the typical girl-next-door getting in a love triangle with a younger guy and an older mature guy.  But I still wanted to include it because 1) It has Ayase Haruka and Fukushi Sota, both of whom I like 2) I’m pretty sure it’ll be a hit this season.  Ayase Haruka + rom-com = popular drama.  😉

______

Again, this is only a list of dramas that caught my eye.  You can find the full list of the upcoming fall dramas here.

What upcoming jdramas are you looking forward to and why?  Let me know if there are any that you’re interested in that’s not on my list.  Obviously, all of the dramas I mentioned up above are on my radar..some more than others.  My #1 anticipated jdrama is Gu-gu datte Neko de Aru because it looks so darn adorable!  I’m really hoping it’ll be good!  I also think that Nobunaga Concerto and Gomenne Seishun should be a lot of fun.  I will try to keep my expectations low though.  😉

Other upcoming jdramas I didn’t list: (as mentioned in the comments)

  • Shinya Shokudo Season 3 – It may come as a surprise to you but…I actually haven’t gotten around to watching this drama yet. >_>  Thus I didn’t include it on my list since I will not be starting the third season without having seen the first two!
  • Yuube no Curry, Ashita no Pan (Last Night’s Curry, Tomorrow’s Bread) – I considered including this but ended up leaving it out.  I like Naka Riisa and the concept of the story – a widow who is living with her father in law – but I’m not sure about all the sidestories with the side characters.  (as shown in the trailer)

  • Takenouchi Yutaka, need you say more. No, not at all.

The kitty one looks worth trying (don’t know the actress), I’m not big on Taiga either so I don’t think I’ll try this one. I like Mitsushima but Nishikido… not really at all. So I’ll probably wait for the reviews on this one before I try it and instead watch stuff of Mitsushima’s that I haven’t gotten to. Kengo Kora, yes, yes, yes, but Kyou wa Kaisha Yasumimasu…. I hate love triangles, and Fukushi Sota just is always underwhelming. The casting in that one just doesn’t work for me (although I watch most Tamaki Hiroshi dramas), but this trio… and love triangle, no. I think there’s also a Yamapi drama coming up but it has teacher-student love story (ick) and Yamapi can’t act, so not for me. Not sure what else is coming up…

    • Heh, I feel the same about Kyou wa Kaisha Yasumimasu, but I’ll be firmly rooting for Tamaki Hiroshi <3 Just hope it's a character that allows him to shine, despite the icky plot. I've even gone back to Taira no Kiyomori for some Tamaki in jidaigeki – a different kind of yum.

I'm also looking forward to Nobunaga Concerto – just look at the star-studded cast. Don't care about Oguri Shun, but will watch for Fujiki Naohito and Mukai Osamu. Shibasaki Kou's character looks fairly feisty, should be fun. Takenouchi Yutaka's drama looks interesting as well, it's been a while since he had one.

    • Well Nobunaga Concerto actually is not a taiga, more like a fusion historical/period like JIN? HEHEH I thought you’d be excited for Kora Kengo too. I can’t remember where I saw Fukushi Sota, hm.

      • Well, not into historical then, not when it comes to dramas. I’ve tried, maybe I’ll try one day again, maybe not…

Fukushi Sota: Starman (meh), Library Wars (meh), A Clinic on the Sea (meh). And has been cast as lead in the adaptation of my favourite shoujo manga! *cries*

      • Oguri shun plays a student just for the first 30minute..it’s hard to find the cast because in the anime, the main chara (played by oguri) should be a student in present days but he’s Oda nobunaga in the past, so choosing an older an charismatic actor should be the best choice

  • First, I want to say that the way you categorized the shows was really clever since that’s the criteria most people use when deciding if they’ll watch a drama or not.

Seems like slim pickings this season. Though, I may not actually be the best judge of previews after that whole MOZU debacle last year.

    Kitty Show:
An hour of Japanese cat video every week? Sign me up. I give this a thumbs up on cuteness alone.

    Zombie Show:
This is funny because I had an idea for a movie like this a while ago (the whole weak zombie thing). Might be a pretty funny diversion.

    Taxi Show:
This is going to depend all on the acting. It’s king of a cool concept but it may start to play thin by the end of the season.

    The rest look like tripe.

  • To be honest I am fine with everything sux this coming season as long as Shinya Shokudo 3 is as dreamy as ever (I will take 10s of O Joe in this again…anytime over 11eps of Gokuaku Ganbo )

I watch KoraKengo anything, he’s the best actor 5yr+ or 5yr- for me. I will also watch Taxi as well, for obvious reason but… I honestly never had much luck with loving any MyYukata anything post BeachBoys…and back to I’d rather have a perfect SS3 if I am going with cool BAMF looking ojisan who is actually a teddy bear gathering a bunch of quirky characters either in his little shop or little taxi I can very much fall in love with right away.

    • For ” Cool BAMF looking ojisan who is actually a teddy bear gathering a bunch of quirky characters in his little shop”, Yes, those words can be used to describe the Master in Shinya Shokudo, LOL.

  • Hi again!

I actually don’t like Takenouchi Yutaka (or episodic dramas for that matter), but I’m looking forward to Sutekina SenTAXI because I like the comedian who is writing the script.

I also like Kudo Kankuro’s dramas with that producer the best, so I’m looking forward to Gomen ne Seishun even more because of that. Personally I was a little disappointed in the cast because it was missing a most of the people they have used a lot in previous dramas that I really like. However, I am curious about Mitsushima in this role because characters in their dramas are so different from everything she has done in the past.

I’m also looking forwards to Shin’ya Shokudou 3 because I enjoyed the first two seasons a lot. I’m planning to check out several others as well, but those are the three I definitely don’t want to miss.

  • I’m hoping that the zombie show is so bad it’s good, if that makes sense. It sounds too wacky to pass up. I’ll watch Gomenne Seishun for Mitsushima and Ayase’s drama could be fun. I watched a bit of the Nobunaga Concerto anime and it had a few interesting ideas, but I just couldn’t connect with the main character, so I’m wary of the drama.

That cat drama looks so cute! I hope it gets subbed.

  • Hi!
I’ll watch Shinya Shokudo, still hoping for the good storyline, because its steam lost a bit in second season. I think the first season is really good. It’s very slice of life, which is right up to my alley.

Will try the Sentaxi one, for Takenouchi Yutaka and the storyline , hopefully I become good. Will try a little bit of the rest as usual.

And, for Oyaji no Senaka, I do like the first episode the most for now. my opinion may change when I watch it again later though =).

  • Sad no one mentions Yuube Curry, it has potential to be a surprise in the season, much alike Coffee-ya no Hitobito and Gin Nikan in previous seasons. I like the screenwriters who had wrote the likes of Suika, Q10, Sexy Voice and Robo, they have yet to do anything wrong in my books and it gets an interesting set of cast.

    • I also checked out the trailer for Yuube no Curry Ashita no Pan. I like the concept of the story and I like Naka Riisa. Didn’t include it on my list though.

    • I’m also going to try that one (from the trailer), Because I enjoy Coffee-ya no Hitobito and Gin Nikan.
I’m not familiar yet with the writer’s work before, like, I’ve just watched Kuramoto Sou’s works (Kaze no Garden, Yasashii Jikan, and Haikei, Chichiue Sama, which have been available years before) just recently. I do have plan to watch them though.

    • Another way to narrow down your drama choices would be to simply see which dramas are going to get subbed. A lot of jdramas end up not getting English subbed so I have to cross them off my list. :'(

  • i hope uve been watching Sutekina Sen TAXI, its actually a time travel back to the future drama. the stories each epsiode are pretty good with good acting. make sure to check hamsapsukebes post on it to get the subs for the first 6 episodes.

also gomen no seishun has been fun to watch.

nobunaga concerto is a garbage story and annoying naive main character, not worth watching.

got gou gou but still havent finished watching it. its wowow and slice of life so its probably above average.

ashita yube no curry is a nice slice of life mourning/moving on drama. i liked it, it had comedy but also introspection

you will probably like Kyou wa Kaisha Yasumimasu since its pretty much tailored for women.

    • I haven’t gotten to try Sutekina Sen TAXI yet, but I just realized it’s on Crunchyroll! What a surprise! I haven’t tried Yuube no Curry Ashita no Pan yet, I will have to add that to my list. Currently the only jdrama that I’ve kept up with is Gu Gu. I only have 1 episode left to watch. It’s my favorite out of the others I tried (Gomenne Seishun, Nobunaga Concerto, Kyou wa Kaisha Yasumimasu).

      • ya the subs i think are from crunchyroll. but i went and got the raws from jdramacity.
i still remember (damn im old) how crunchyroll started with the bs about poor shinji the college student that needs donations and volunteers to post any type of content up(when in fact they were working for an it company while doing crunchyroll as a side thing which they planned to get investors for) so i havent been suporting them at all.
so far 8 episodes have been subbed. i like how the show is funny and well written plus the guest stars in each episodes can act.

i dislike large ensemble high school cast shows so i shouldnt be liking gomenne seishun, but i guess my mitsushima bias is there so i still watch it, although i just skip the parts of the other characters not the mains.

im not a cat person so i havent realy started watching gou gou yet but ive skimmed through all 4 episodes. i mostly got it for miyazawa rei. im just curious of her acting skill since i found out that she was a famous idol in her prime and had one of the highest selling photobooks in the 80s? or was it the 90s? called coffee where her mother her manager got her to go nude when she was 18 at peak of her career. she stopped acting and just recently restarted in gou where she wasnt the main character and this one gou gou where she is.

so how much did u dislike nobunaga concerto? 😛

kyou wa kaisha too formulaic? so far unless its an actress i really like i wont try watching a older woman with younger man romance.

will you be doing a look at all the new winter shows coming? so far i havent really seen a show that has piqued my interest.

        • Somehow I didn’t find Gomenne Seishun to be very funny. O_O Even though it had Mitsushima Hikari in it, it wasn’t enough to keep me watching it. I started out liking KWK but then it lacked the must watch factor for me? Actually I liked Nobunaga Concerto at first. I thought it was funny. But then Oguri’s character just makes me want to facepalm. X_X

I thought the cat would be the main focus of Gu Gu but it’s actually not. O_O I guess it’s more about the main character’s daily life and the quirky things she experiences. It’s really peaceful.

Yeah I will write up an anticipated jdramas for the winter season once more trailers/promo posters are released. 😉
